Reflecting on Moving Forward
As I reflect back on the last two years of my school at Dominican University, it has always been in the back of my head whether or not I will stick with this after all of the classes are done. I am at the end of this path and integrating social media into my classroom has never sounded more necessary. I have found so many awesome resources that could possibly change the way that students learn. Not only that, but the way that I communicate information with parents and community members could be completely different. I had recently learned about the Remind App to communicate with parents. This changed the way I communicated with parents, but through this class I found even more social media sites like Twitter, Instagram, and Edmodo that would be beneficial as well.
Moving forward, I'd like to look into transforming some of my current classroom interventions into technology based interventions. I'd also like to streamline some of communication with families and community members through the use of some of the social media sites I have looked into during this class like I mentioned above. I think it would be really impressive to create an Instagram page and Twitter Page for my student's classroom projects and work. We do so many awesome things in the classroom that many parents do not often get to see. I think it would be incredibly beneficial for students to document their lives in the classroom for their parents to see at home. I think often parents want to know what is going on with their kids during the day, but they aren't able to come in and volunteer or come to school events. If students could document what is going on in the classroom through an avenue that their parents are familiar with, parents may feel more comfortable with their child's progress. I currently send out reminders on the Remind App which is fantastic, but it would be even better for students to take on that leadership role and report out themselves using either Twitter or Instagram.
I absolutely think there is a place for social media in the classroom. This is an ever changing world and the classroom is no exception. The classrooms that I grew up would never have been able to integrate social media into the classroom. However, I teach in a 21st century classroom and the students that enter my classroom are so much more literate with technology than I ever thought to be when I was their age. We didn't have the social media avenues that we have now, and I think it is my responsibility for students to get the most out of what technology has to offer, that includes showing them how to effectively converse with social media sites like Instagram and Twitter. With new technology comes new responsibility. Check out this article I recently read on tips of effectively integrating social media into the classroom Check this out!
