Week 8 Snapchat in the classroom?

Getting Started with Snapchat in Your Classroom

Okay, so I read the title of this article and was like "No way, no how!" My students are third graders so I don't often have problems with them being on their phones, but I also coach Jr. High Girls' Basketball and it is like pulling teeth to get these girls off of their phones. They are always on Snapchat sending weird pictures and silly things to their friends, and their friends are usually in the same room. I use Snapchat as well and I do exactly the same thing. When I think of Snapchat, the last place I think of it is in the classroom. I use it as a mindless way to de-stress after a long day of work.

However, then I read the article, and the same juices that start to flow when I get lesson ideas in my mind began to flow again. There are so many ways that Snapchat can actually be used effectively in the classroom. This was something that I never would've believed, had I not read how successful it has been shown to be.

So, one of the best thing that sparked in my mind after reading the article was that this could be used as a story telling app, or as a review app. Students could read a story and then use a series of Snaps to summarize what they have read, like a cartoon strip. They could also do a character study and use Snaps to describe how the characters acts during different parts of the story. During vocabulary time, students could create mini-lessons in the form of Snapstories to teach their classmates about new words. Not only would these activities be fun for students, but everyone in the class would be engaged because it is something cool that they like to do. The other way you could use Snapchat in the classroom would be to use it as a review tool. Students could tune in do your classroom stories and see the big points of the day, or the main points of a lesson. This could be incredibly helpful for students who miss a day because they are out of town or at home sick. The opportunities are endless when it comes to using this app in the classroom. I can't believe I never thought of this before.

  1. These are great ideas! Snapchat is not my strong suit so this helps give me some ideas to look out for as well!
