Week 3, Digitally Mapping Our Way to the Future

This week we had the opportunity to digitally map how we use technology in our personal lives. I really enjoyed this activity because it caused me to stop for a second and actually think about how I use technology effectively. I always thought that I was a technology resident. I grew up with technology, and I've always considered myself technologically literate. I often find myself helping older teachers in my building and can often troubleshoot my way through problems that arise when working with technology. However, after doing this Digital Map I have found that I am more of a visitor than a resident. I use technology all the time, but I rarely contribute to anything. I usually have a million things going on every day, and I use technology accordingly. I use it as a resource or a tool for entertainment.

The parts of the internet that I do consider my a resident in are things related to school and work. My school is a large Google for Education school. Most of our collaboration and evaluation systems go through Google. If it weren't for that, I wouldn't be a resident there either. Spotify and ITunes are two other resources that I consider myself a resident. I create playlists for my classroom often and contribute to playlists of other people. Pinterest is the main thing that I consider myself as a resident. I create things in class and share the successes and failures with my Pinterest followers. I search for resources and organize materials in folders. I have many teacher followers who teach the same grade level and we are constantly bouncing ideas off of each other. I also do crafting and share different ideas with other friends who like to craft. I spend A LOT of time on Amazon both personally and professionally. However, it is very quick and I always have something specific in mind. I do not contribute to Amazon in any way.

Digital Residents vs. Digital Visitors...Where do you fall?

Comments

  1. I, too, thought I was more of a resident, but realized that I was more of a visitor when it came to any technology that I used. I had some social media presence with FB and Twitter, but other than that nothing else. I am envious of your school being a Google for Education school. There are some many great ways to use it in a school and with students!

  2. Like you Stephanie I was surprised (pleasantly) by the findings in my map as well. It's important to reflect on all things- including our technology use every once in a while. I'm glad you enjoyed the task.

  3. I wonder how differently we can define residency and visiting statuses if we approach them from different angles. While we like to think that we choose to be a resident or visitor, our situations and conditions sometimes dictate how that happens. Using a map like this to reflect can help us consider the role we play in determining our own online/tech status. Do you think that your professional life or your personal life offers you more chances to reach 'resident' status?
